TAXPAYERS SAY “OVER OUR DEAD BODIES” TO BAILOUT
Call for a taxpayer revolt and ‘die-in’ on Capitol Hill

WHEN: 12 p.m., Monday, September 29

WHERE: Outside Cannon Building, Independence and New Jersey Ave., House of Representatives, Washington DC

Representatives of different sectors of society—health care workers, teachers, construction workers, professionals—will hold a press conference to denounce the bailout bill. With the message, “Bailout? Over my dead body!” they will stage a die-in on the steps of the Cannon Building and along the route Congresspeople use to enter the Capitol to cast their votes.

Organized by CODEPINK, the group will represent the outrage that the public feels about the bailout. “Congress will be voting on the biggest give-away of our tax dollars to the financial sector in our nations history,” says CODEPINK cofounder Medea Benjamin. “Despite their efforts to portray this as a compromise bill that helps both Wall St. and Main St., in reality it represents an appalling transfer of wealth upward. It’s time for a taxpayers revolt against this mind-boggling Wall St. swindle.”

“We teachers sacrifice to equip our classrooms with books, struggling to pay our mortgages and healthcare while reckless Wall Street speculators are bailed out with our tax dollars,” says former Texas school teacher Desiree Fairooz. “I feel betrayed by Congress.”

CODEPINK calls on Congress to reject the very Wall St. financiers who brought on the crisis. “Congress should stand up for the well-being of average Americans, not the bank accounts of billionaires,” says Benjamin.

I’m a taxpayer and I want to pay more taxes to be sure this whole thing doesnt fall on my and our collective head. Like my father always said whenever I complained about paying taxes, “be glad you have earned something to have to pay taxes in the first place”. Your political theatrics don’t serve any serious purpose. If you’re serious you would be involved in a serious dialogue rather than splaying your bodies on sidewalks. It is fiddling while Rome is burning.

While I can appreciate the points in Official release: TAXPAYERS SAY “OVER OUR DEAD BODIES” TO BAILOUT Call for a taxpayer revolt and ‘die-in’ on Capitol Hill  | PINKtank, I am tired and sick of hearing rubbish about the “economic recovery”. The Federal government borrowed and spent $6.1T over the past 4 years to obtain a cumulative $700B increase in the country’s GDP. This means we’ve borrowed and spent $8.70 for every $1 of nominal “economic growth” in GDP. In constant $, Gross domestic product is flat, we have no “economic growth” at all for our $6.1T. In constant dollars, the GDP in 2011 might go back to the 2007 level, if the US economy continues “growing” at the same pace reached in the first ninety days of 2011. If not, then the Gross Domestic Product will actually be lower than before recession levels. There is no recovery, the facts prove this.
