CODEPINK Activists Stage Arrest of Karl Rove for Lying to Congress about the Iraq War
at Mortgage Bankers Annual Convention

SAN FRANCISCO — When Karl Rove took the stage at the Mortgage Bankers Association annual convention at the Moscone Center in San Francisco today, CODEPINK women in the audience staged a citizen’s arrest of the former Bush Administration chief of staff, under California Code 837. This action follows on the heels of yesterday’s appearance on stage of Medea Benjamin, co-founder of CODEPINK, who disrupted the convention to ask for a moratorium on foreclosures.

Janine Boneparth, 58, of Ross, CA, walked on the stage with handcuffs and placed a cuff on Rove’s wrist before he yanked it away, while stating, “I have to make a citizens arrest.  You are under arrest for treason.” (Watch film of the arrest from ABC 7 here: http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/business&id=6461516)

At the same moment, Nancy Mancias, 38, of San Francisco, CA, held a banner in front of the stage that read, “Rove (hearts) torture, treason and fraud!”"Ladies and gentlemen, Karl Rove is not fit to address you today,” Mancias said. “Karl Rove was involved in lying to the American people about the Iraq war.”

The moderator responded by asking Sen. Mitchell and Rove, with a chuckle, who will win World Series. After Rove talked about who in Congress is responsible for the economic crisis and who should we believe, Rae Abileah, 25, of Half Moon Bay, stood up.

“Karl Rove, how can we believe you when you lied to get us into the war in Iraq?” Abileah said. “You are under arrest for contempt of Congress.”

Abileah held up a banner that read: “ARREST ROVE/ Lying about War/ Outing C.I.A. Agent/ Contempt of Congress/ Supporting Torture”.  Three security men tackled her and clasped their hands over her face. She broke free and repeated, “Rove is under arrest for treason.”

A few minutes later, when Rove was talking about the war, Keiko Schnelle, 21, of Albany, and Blaine Clarke, 28, of San Francisco, stood up with a banner that said “Rove = War Criminal.”

“Karl Rove is the one misleading the American people,” Clarke shouted. “Karl Rove is a war criminal. Arrest Karl Rove!”

Security then pushed Clarke to the ground and dragged her out along with Schnelle.  All five CODEPINK women were escorted out of the building by police without charges. They asked police to assist with the future citizens arrest of Karl Rove. They carried copies of the full arrest complaint, which is included below this release.

Yesterday during a keynote panel with heads of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac at the MBA convention, Medea Benjamin, co-founder of CODEPINK, walked onstage to call for a moratorium on foreclosures. (Watch video of it here here http://www.truveo.com/Mortgage-Bankers-Gathering-Met-By-SF-Protestors/id/1530783410).

“Since the public bailed out your companies, the public should have a right to ask a question,” Benjamin said calmly once she walked up onto the stage. “We need a moratorium on foreclosures. Will you please call for that, sirs?”  She was then forcefully escorted off the stage.

CODEPINK has been birddogging Karl Rove as he tours the country, including demonstrations at his recent Sacramento appearance at the Perspectives public affairs forum, and at the Houston Aquarium.  Benjamin remarked, “We are demanding accountability from Karl Rove who lied to get us into the war and outed C.I.A. agent Valerie Plame.  If law enforcement and Congress won’t do it, we the American people will!”
CODEPINK, founded in 2002, is a women-initiated grassroots peace and social justice movement working to end the war in Iraq, stop new wars, and redirect our resources into health care, education and other life-affirming activities. We reject the Bush administration’s fear-based politics that justify violence, and instead call for policies based on compassion, kindness and a commitment to international law. With an emphasis on joy and humor, CODEPINK women and men seek to activate, amplify and inspire a community of peacemakers through creative campaigns and a commitment to non-violence.  For more info, visit www.codepinkalert.org.

Well it took a couple of women to do what the country should have done long ago, as a citizen of this great united states, I commend you. It’s about time I say.

  • desch

Though I did think he was going to pimp slap her for a minute there.

  • Mike

It is shameful that you can acost a public figure and not be charged with anything. THere is a time and place for speaking your mind, it is in the voting booth. Code pink dosnt have any more rights than any other citizen, you ave a right to free speech but you dont have a right to be heard. I think they violated Karl roves rights to left the hell alone at work.

  • stop the maddness

Karl Rove and this entire administration should look great in orange jump suits, for life.
Did that Security guard have his hand over a Code Pink members mouth? What happened to our free speech.
    Go Code Pink.
    Karl Rove is a pig.

  • Virginia

In response to Mike, so long as one’s vote is cancelled out by an antiquated electoral college system and criminals can be pardoned by more powerful criminals, public demonstrations like these are a citizen’s last viable recourse.

First of all, I cannot believe that “Mike” exists — blaming Code Pink, indeed. Anyone who would defend Karl Rove at this point should be behind bars himself!

Thank you Code Pink Ladies. I love you all and I so wish I could have participated.

“Any United States Marshall or any authorized U.S. Law Enforcement Officer present is obligated under the provisions of California Code 837 to take you into custody and bring you forthwith before the nearest magistrate to answer these charges and to advise you of your rights with include…”

I take it there was some dereliction of duty on the part of the officers of the law? Shouldn’t they have been taking ROve into custody not forecibly ejecting citizens?

  • Nick

You are naive if you believe that Rove is going to submit to arrest or a cop is going to take him into custody after you arrest him. The only time citizen’s arrest works is in court. Why? You can prove by the judge resisting arrest that this country is not ruled by laws but by arbitrary rule.

You file a complaint against the judge with the state’s Judicial review board and the state’s Lawyer’s Professional Responsibility Board since according to the law a judge is supposed to always obey the law. Resisting arrest is proof he/she is above the law.

Oh and to make the complaint even more effective you carbon copy it to the County Commissioners in that district. This step is essential. It destroys County Commissioner’s confidence in the judge and the judicial system.

So in this case the individual should refuse to hire an attorney and should arrest her judge at her next hearing being an accomplice to Rove’s resisting arrest – that would be a charge of obstruction of justice. That way you would teach the “law” that is would be better to harass the stupid sheep instead of a lion.

Yes, this is a method I have used and it works.

  • J Fleming

The comment that “there is a time and place for speaking your mind, it is in the voting booth” is irrelvant because we neved had a voice in Rove’s appointment in this administration’s shadow government.

  • Nick

According to the news reports I see that no one was arrested. In this case you should file a complaint against the County Attorney with the state’s Lawyer’s Professional Responsibility Board for failing to uphold the law. It is his/her duty to make sure that the laws are enforced in that county. This was not the case as evidenced by the woman being prevented from arresting Rove. Ceraintly the poolice prevented this woman from returning to the venue.

You would also file a complaint against all the judges in the judicial district for the same reasons. Again you would file the complaint with the state’s Board of Judicial Review and the state’s Lawyer’s Professional Responsibility Board.

Of course you would carbon copy all complaints to the County Commissioners in the district. This is very effective and perfectly legal.

Well done, Code Pink. You interrupted them and got their attention and made your point at least four times at this one event. Excellent work.

  • Douglas

I had never heard of Code Pink either, but I must say it’s about time someone brought justice to Mr. Rove (who probably is Mike by the way.) Without Rove, Bush never gets elected in the first place, and the world would be much better off. As for Jane, you go ahead and vote for the woman who doesn’t even support equal pay for you. That makes you about as intelligent as Palin for representing the party that’s known for oppressing women. I’ll be voting for the guy who wants my daughter to get the same opportunities as your son.

  • Jane

Bravo, Code Pink! Janice is my hero! I think we should make a citizens arrest on Rove every chance we get across the country. He has done so much to bring our country down. You were right – his actions are treason at the utmost!

  • janet gardiner

i don’t know why i just saw this old news for the first time on cnn, on rick’s list today 3/30/2010. i commend you code pink! how can we possibly vote on these issues or the people running when we all know for a fact that bush’s both elections, were both stolen by the bush administration. they collapesd the whole economy. it is time for we the people to throw out the republi-crats. both parties are as bad as the other.they think its a club, and their to comfortable with their positions. its time for a change, a real change. we have god given inalienable rights to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. they have made us targets, with their thinking they can be the world police. we can’t even take care of our own, but we’re supposed to take care of the rest of the world. that is what did rome in.keep up the good work, i’ve been telling people for a long time men have screwed up the world, its time for them to step aside and let the women fix what they broke.

  • janet gardiner
