Press, War Profiteers

Cofounder Medea Benjamin and Indypendent writer Arun Gupta posted an incredible column on Common Dreams today, inspired by the historic election yesterday, that calls for a grassroots mass-mobilization of communities nationwide to create a plan to solve the economic crisis and reinvest in America. They write:

Because the “free market” has proven a farce and the right is in disarray, there is a huge opening to pass policies that can benefit all Americans. As the economy sinks, only concerted public action can revive it.

They offer some solid suggestions of how any average Joe or Jill can get behind this. Check it out here. Is this possible? Will people do this? It seems entirely doable. What would you do?

Let’s boycott. Boycott the banks; boycott consumption. The only way to demand an economy not based on debt-driven consumer spending is to stop buying stuff, especially with plastic cards. ALL the banks should be boycotted while the bailout goes on without re-regulation. Everyone can move their money into tiny community credit unions, and out of the big banks. Cut up credit cards. And if people simply stop buying things, it will force investment in a real economy–let’s go back to manufacturing. I don’t want to buy my clothes from sweatshops in China, where workers cannot organize, and there are no environmental regulations. Organized, national boycotts of banks, Wal-Marts, and shopping malls–with press releases explaining why.
