The Arab democratic spring, striving to end authoritarian rule and establish freedoms and social justice, has not been welcome by all. Israel and its main lobby in the U.S., the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), for instance, appear to have been caught off guard and visibly disturbed by the seemingly irreversible transformations that these uprisings promise to bring about in the Arab world and, to an extent, the world at large[...]

Assassination is Justice? America Celebrates Vengeance

This week in America there has been something distasteful about the joyful celebrations of the killing of Osama Bin Laden. More than distaste, it has been filled with macho and the elation of revenge. Worse, it has obscured American's attention from how actually Bin Laden died. I am among those millions of people around the world who are relieved that this terrorist who was responsible for repeated heinous acts that have taken thousands of lives can no longer do so.  But I am also hearing many people speaking quietly, as if it would be anti-American, about "being sickened," or "revolted" or "appalled" by the jubilation. And we have more reason than might be immediately evident from news reports and White House announcements for our reactions.

While it's clear the killing of Osama bin Laden was an assassination, I can hear change coming. We must use this moment as an opportunity to focus our efforts to end the wars. We must take up Julia Ward Howe's urgent Mother's Day Proclamation for Peace and say clearly, "Mr. President, Enough -- End This War."

Arise and tell the true story of Mother’s Day. Arise and gather with other women to declare an end to war. Say firmly: “We will not make love to war makers. Our children will not be raised to kill another mother’s child. We are women at home in the world, and recognize the need for [...]
