Senator Harry Reid and Guns: Time to Take a Stand

When CODEPINK, MoveOn and representatives of other organizations marched into Senator Harry Reid’s DC office on Tuesday, December 18, they wanted a simple answer to a simple question: Does the Senator support a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity clips, such as the legislation proposed by Senator Dianne Feinstein and supported by President Obama and Vice President Biden? It would seem like a no-brainer for the Senate Majority Leader to fall in line with the leadership of his party in backing a modest bill that would ban the sale of weapons that are only good for mass murder. Unfortunately, Reid’s senior policy advisor Kasey Gillette was unable to give an answer.

While there is a lot of talk in Democratic circles about Republicans standing in the way of sensible gun laws, a hidden secret is that the Democratic Senator leader from Nevada, who is key to getting gun control legislation passed in this country, has been as pro-gun
as most Republicans.

In the past, Reid has touted the rights of gun owners and eagerly sought the NRA’s endorsements, contributions and praise. In 2004, Reid was one of the rare Democrats to be endorsed by the NRA. In 2009 he sought to please the powerful lobby by supporting a controversial bill to allow gun owners with concealed weapon permits to cross state lines. The legislation, which was vehemently opposed by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, fell just two votes short of the 60 votes needed. The NRA, however, was delighted that Reid had supported the bill and allowed it to be brought to the floor for a vote.

In 2010, when Reid was engaged in a bitter re-election campaign against Republican Sharron Angle, the NRA refrained from endorsing, but contributed to Reid’s campaign and reminded voters of his pro-gun record. An NRA letter to its Nevada members touted that Reid “opposed the Obama administration’s interest in reinstating the assault weapons ban, halting momentum; helped pass a law that allows gun owners to carry firearms in national parks; voted against the District of Columbia’s gun ban; voted for legislation to allow pilots in commercial airline cockpits to be armed.” It also noted that Reid was instrumental in passing legislation halting lawsuits that were attempting to hold gun manufacturers and dealers responsible for weapons used in criminal acts.

NRA head Wayne LaPierre called Senator Reid “a true champion of the Second Amendment” and said “no one has been a stronger advocate for responsible gun ownership than him.”

After the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shootings in July 2012, Senator Reid blocked any debate about gun control, insisting that the Senate schedule was “too packed” to spend time on it.

After this latest tragedy at Sandy Hook that left 20 children dead, Reid took a timid step forward, saying it was time to “engage in a meaningful conversation and thoughtful debate about how to change laws and culture that allow violence to grow.” Hinting at a softening of his position, he said that as we discuss how best to protect our nation’s children, “every idea should be on the table.”

But for the gun control advocates in his office on Tuesday, Reid’s faint-hearted call for reform was not nearly enough. With alarm clocks in hand, they said the time for discussion was long past; they wanted action. They said it was time for Senator Reid to stand up to the NRA and to use his leadership to protect our children, not the gun manufacturers.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has been making the same demand. “Calling for ‘meaningful action’ is not enough,” he said. “We need immediate action. We have heard all the rhetoric before. What we have not seen is leadership — not from the White House and not from Congress. That must end today. This is a national tragedy and it demands a national response.”

In a move that seems to heed the call for action, President Obama just appointed Vice President Joe Biden to lead a task force on new gun laws. Senator Dianne Feinstein said she will introduce legislation early next year to ban the sale of new assault weapons, as well as big clips, drums and strips of more than 10 bullets. Even Virginia’s Mark Warner, one of the few staunch pro-gun Senate Democrats, reversed course to back restrictions on assault weapons, declaring that “the status quo is not acceptable anymore.”

With 20 children dead, President Obama insisting that preventing gun violence will be a second-term policy priority, and Harry Reid not facing re-election until 2016, perhaps the Senator will now be willing to stand up to the NRA? The clock is ticking.

I have been the victim of gun violence in a domestic situation. My Ex swore that only time would keep him from getting me. That was in the 1970′s. I was raised with guns in our home. I know that the gun does nothing unless used by a person and that the person makes the decision as to how the gun will be used. .
In the l980′s I was threatened by a man on the street. I put my hand in my purse and firmly told him to go back the other way and leave me alone. “You don’t want to fool with me!” The threat of a possible weapon had him turn away and leave me alone.
I am now a concealed carry handgun licensee. I’ve never had to use my weapon–but it is there in case I do.

“Gun Free Zones” only advertise to a person out to do harm that those in the area cannot protect themselves or harm them. It is time to train and arm our teachers. Potential assailants need to know they will be met with deadly force. These assailants always commit suicide or run when they hear sirens approaching–deadly force approaching.

If guns aren’t used, they will go to knives like the man in China that attacked 22 nursery school children on the same day as the CT shooting. They may use bombs like Timothy McVey.

Chicago has the strictest gun laws in our nation. They also have the highest murder rate. Tell you anything????

You are all Liberal/Hippie pussies! I hope that the shit hits the fan so that I can smile at all of you while you’re unarmed and defenseless. I really do not have a bias point of view towards what you say. I just do not see your logic in anything. The strong will always survive!

You are an idiot Matt!! The gun laws that are in place now are perfectly fine. You and people like you are non-american, stepping all over our constitutional rights. It has been said millions of time before but I think it definetly applies here. “Guns dont kill people, people kill people.”

  • Ryan Spurgeon

The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun.

  • dks300

You are a bunch of spineless weaklings! You want to remove our troops that occupy foreign countries, which is their JOB that they do willingly, and you protested a plan that would put armed security in every school! You made this organization look like a fool for protesting something that would actually help this nation! But you all do not care about the nation or your rights…. You all are perfectly happy to mindlessly and brainlessly give away our rights!

  • Ryan Spurgeon

If you take away all forms of protection and guns, then you have to rely on the police or government. For example. “Mr. bad guy? Can you wait qbout 15 min before blowing my head off so that the police can arrive and attempt to save me? NO! I WILL PROTECT MYSELF AND MY FAMILY! That is my right since December 15, 1791

As it turns out, if you would do your homework, areas of the country with permissive gun laws have fewer violent crimes. Banning high capacity magazines will only take them out of the hands of law abiding citizens not the criminals. The assault weapons ban is not a ban on assault weapons, but a ban on semi-automatic rifles.

Assault weapons are already illegal in the US. For those of you who haven’t done your homework, an assault rifle is defined as a weapon capable of semi-automatic and fully automatic rates of fire by use of a selector switch. Before the argument starts with “why do you need”, I don’t need. This has nothing to do with need. I want an AR15, so I have an AR15. You don’t need a TV, or an expensive car but people own these things because they want them.

Are firearms dangerous? Of course they are, in the wrong hands they are dangerous so are cars, knives, bats, lead pipes and so on.

Many of these other objects have been used in violence. The good or bad isn’t in the object, it’s in the person using the object. I would ask that before trying to have something banned, try to look at all perspectives and not just ban it because you don’t like it.

  • Anonymous

It is already illegal to murder people, so why do you think that making something else illegal will stop murder? Guns are illegal in Norway, but that didn’t make any difference there. Bad people will do bad things. Figure out a way to stop that, but do not do it at the expense of responsible gun owners. I understand that people are upset, and they should be. This was a horrible tragedy. However, identify the actual problem, not something that you simply do not like or understand. The bury your head in the sand and blindly point fingers approach is not going to work.

  • Gar Fish

gun control is HITTING YOUR TARGET . the2nd amendment is to protect us from the government, like the socialists(marxists) that are in power at this time.

Assault weapons are FULLY AUTOMATIC – only federally licenced people can own TRUE assault weapons.

And, for the record, that “protest” during Mr. LaPierre’s speech was completely low-class and out of line. It goes to show why organizations such as this can’t be taken seriously. The NRA is killing our children? Really? No. No, They really are not. If you are trying to fix something, then you should probably have a clue as to what the problem is. … But, I see that you also think that we should end all foreign wars (head in the sand), and that we should ground the drone program (you mean the thing that keeps American soldiers from having to go into harms way?). Wow. You guys really suck. I bet a lot of you voted for everyone getting a medal in school events instead of the first three places, so that even the fat kids felt special. This is why soccer moms shouldn’t make important decisions except for which snack to bring for halftime.

CODEPINK go back to the yuppy bar you came out of, have another drink and die on the way home,Please do not kill an innocent bystander.

  • Floyd McKinney

    Hello “codepink”,
I was a little concerned about your group. But I see now that you are really not much of an issue after all. I would really just like to ask some questions regarding your “DEMAND” for gun control and stricter gun laws. Really?
First, you do realize that the police are under no obligation to protect you as a citizen right? That would be up to you. By the way, when a bad person has a gun to your head I really don’t thing harsh language is going to save you, nor do I believe that reminding them that the gun that they have is illegal. You’ll still be dead. The point that I am attempting to make is that your .org is nothing more than a fly in the ointment, if that. I wouldn’t call you Hippies that would be insulting Hippies. I’ll stick with ignorant, because I would like to believe that you can learn and would hope that the truth is what you would hold on to and not a knee jerk reaction to a retard with a gun. Since the focus seems to be on children being murdered why don’t you look at just how many children are dying each day in automobile accidents, both in and out of vehicles.
    Just a thought…

Ha! I’m surprised by the reactions here – - I expected noise from a bunch of elitist, bourgeois anti-gun bigots going on about what animals we . . . mmmm – - what’s the PC word these days – - “gun nuts”, “wing-nuts” , “gun-toting idiots” – - whatever – - holding court here, with no chance of response. So I will give a couple of points to Code Pink for having an open forum. Actually, I was just curious which Foundation (Joyce, McArthur, etc) was giving them monetary support. Anyway, brothers and sisters, good to see you here! Μολὼν λαβέ Keep fighting!!

It’s pitiful that a Man at the NRA Press Release had to do the shouting for all the poor little girls at CodePinq. Just wanted to say that Because of your protests And your Support of “Dinghy Harry” Reid, your organization has actually Prompted me to purchase more assault rifles !
Thank you Kodepynq for all of your Anti-American Services. It will Never, Ever be forgotten.
Go on supporting those who legislate killing the unborn and then turn around and try to raise hell because the children that escaped abortion were just killed later anyway.
You’re not fooling anyone, nor doing anything to help your cause.

Just thought you’d like to know.
    Merry Christmas !

  • StephanieG

“Code pink”, leaving women and children defenseless since the 2012 newton tragedy. Typical.

  • Terry

Hey Asshat! Can’t you read? Assault weapons are already illegal. How about before you open your mouth, you do a little research and think for yourself instead of spewing this nonsense.

  • Paul Hawkins

Yeah, first it’s Assault Weapons bans… then it’s high caliber pistol bans… then low caliber rifles because then they’ll “look scary”… and then low caliber pistols… then swords, then daggers, then knives and maybe even eventually spears, then stakes and maybe rocks and stones, if you could manage it.
You will never, ever, take away my right to self-defense, because, as people with a half-a-brain already know, whatever you outlaw, only outlaws will possess.
Maybe in your demented “reality”, like that of Rosie O’Dumb—, you actually believe that when a gun is pointed at you, you can sing a State Farm jingle and a policeman will just pop up there to save your life and that of your family.
Those of us that do not subsist in the bliss of such a fantasy, have to rely on a more readily available solution.
When the police do eventually arrive on the scene, they can take their pictures and write little notes, and my family will still be around to be sued when the family of the perpetrator comes to steal everything I have using the perverted court system instead.

    It’s been a slippery slope we’re on… still.

  • Paul Hawkins

Call it a hunch, I’m just guessing here, but I don’t think any of the perpetrators of any mass murders are really very concerned at all that there is a sign posted reading “No Guns Allowed!”
All that tells a perp is “Hey – No Resistance Here!!”

The Only thing worse than bringing a knife to a gunfight, is bringing a piece of paper that says “Sorry, no guns allowed.”

Columbine, Virginia Tech, Denver Theater, Sandy Hook, and various Mall shootings would all end very differently if, after the perp fired his first shot, there had been 10 guns pointing back at him.

Gun Laws, Gun Bans, Gun Controls only serve to severely diminish the capacity of the Law Abiding to protect themselves.
Such a drastic push for Restrictive Laws can only serve to procure the Illegitimate Power of the criminal element within the Government over the consent of the governed.

  • Paul Hawkins

Obviously, you support criminals having the right to kill without any resistance.
    Whole-Heartily [sic]

  • Paul Hawkins

Actually, I Don’t like fully-automatic operation of any weapon.
I believe in delivering a well placed shot because, frankly, I Don’t have a unlimited supply of ammunition.
Also, because I can pull the trigger fast enough to emulate a fully-automatic weapon anyway, I don’t require TRUE assault operation anyway.

  • Paul Hawkins

Good luck with that going across, Mister Jones.
These people’s capacity for Reason has been clouded by both Belief and Emotion.
Very explicitly demonstrated by that little girly-man at the NRA Press Conference.
These people have absolutely NO concept of self-defense or what it means to be Law Abiding. All they know is that the gun “looks bad” or “makes a loud shocking noise”.
Remember, these are the same dregs of humanity that voted for 0bama.
Emotion has de-voided them of Reason. And mention Logic and their eyes glaze over and they start having fantasies of Mr. Spock.

  • http://www.facebook.com/davidmfrederick David Frederick

Not to mention the Millions of Children Killed every year from abortion…oh wait you don’t “count” that do you “Code Pink”

  • TONY T

    Thank you Pamela!

Liberals are classic blame-shifters! Have you ever heard of the high crime rates that are in gun-banned countries like England and Australia? There continues to be high crime in those countries since guns were banned. If someone gets murdered by a knife, is it the knife manufacturers fault? Or if someone gets assaThanulted with a baseball bat, is it the bat manufacturers fault? When are you going to blame the criminals that commit these crimes? Probably never since you really never THINK about what you are saying. As a responsible gun owner should not be penalized for owning something that will help keep me and my family safe from the very criminals you seek to protect.

Furthermore, it is so ironic that the people in your camp will fight for the rights of convicted felons, murderers, rapistist, drug dealers, etc. etc., etc. when ending the life of someone innocent, like a baby, has never hurt anyone.

This is not an argument between the “Left” and “Right” anymore. It is a fight between “Right” and “WRONG”!

Matt do the right thing!! Teach that child about Guns and other ways of self defense. Then he or she would have a better chance of not being a victim of violent situations. There will always be violence and people need to know how to react.

Everybody is Screaming Gun Bans Because they
are killing Our Children. Wheres the outrage over the MILLIONS and
BY ABORTION? Nobody see’s the millions of children that are violently
sucked out in bloody mangled pieces out of their mothers wombs plastered
on the News channels 24-7 so they don’t care just Because you can’t See
it Happen On TV By The News Channels that Make Their Living of the Blood of others.

Total number of abortions in the U.S. 1973-2011: 54.5 million+

234 abortions per 1,000 live births (according to the Centers for Disease Control
    Abortions per year: 1.2 million
    Abortions per day: 3,288
    Abortions per hour: 137
    9 abortions every 4 minutes
    1 abortion every 26 seconds

These statistics include only surgical and medical abortions. Because
many contraceptive measures are abortifacients (drugs that induce or
cause abortions), it is important not to overlook the number of children
killed by chemical abortions. Since 1965, an average of 11 million
women have used abortifacient methods of birth control in the United
States at any given time. Using formulas based on the way the birth
control pill works, pharmacy experts project that about 14 million
chemical abortions occur in the United States each year, providing a
projected total of well in excess of 610 million chemical abortions
    between 1965 and 2009.

    When conducting research on abortion
statistics, you may also encounter two different sets of numbers. One
set is from the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) and the other is from
the Guttmacher Institute, the “independent research arm” of Planned
    Parenthood Federation of America.

    The Guttmacher Institute
totals are actually the more accurate since the Institute conducts
private research on abortion providers throughout the country and
because not all states are required to report to the CDC. In fact,
California and New York, where high numbers of abortions occur, are not
    included in CDC figures.

Please keep in mind that if the civilian population is disarmed, then only the government will have arms.

I hope that Senator Reid will hold off on any discussion of more burdensome and oppressive gun laws at least until President Obama stops blocking congressional attempts to follow the trail of documents and e-mails to find out who authorized the Fast and Furious program. If the president continues to protect subordinates from the investigation then he is condoning Fast and Furious and must share responsibility. I hope that we have not arrived at a point where all elected Democrats have total immunity from legal consequences for their actions. The last that I heard was that over 300 people had been murdered with guns provided to criminals through Fast and Furious.

I hope that any congressional search for relief from these horrid attacks will include a re-examination of the wisdom of gun free zones. As a minimum, there should be consideration of allowing all adult school employees with concealed carry permits to carry while at work.

How many children did the federal agents kill in Waco in 1993? I heard that there were 12 under 5, but do any of you know how many total children died in the process of crushing the Branch Dividians? That was after David Koresh had invited federal agents to come and inspect the Branch Dividians’ guns and they had declined. And no federal agent was ever prosecuted or dismissed over the Waco massacre.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alan-MacDonald/1659822186 Alan MacDonald

Great courage by Medea and Code Pink!!!

Here’s a solution that Medea and Code Pink could try, and which could be implemented by the American people without the
frustration of waiting for the bribed selected officials to pass
legislation, waiting for the murderous; MIC, defense industry, weapons makers, gun makers, the Merchants of Death, or the entire Empire that controls our country having to do squat — which is the only thing they will ever EVER do.

On the home grown model of the Mothers Against Drunken Driving
(MADD), a group (even a small group initially) of dedicated parents
(with moms probably leading the charge) could form a counter group to the brain-dead (and deadly to kids) NRA — and call it the NRAPC (National Rifle Association of Parents and Children).

Sure the NRA regarding the name, would try to sue, but we would
ignore and delay them to death — and the real benefit is taking the
wind out of the NRA’s sails, by offering a sane alternative for sane,
honest, and child-loving rifle owners, target shooters, and

Wayne Lapierre let slip something today on one of his insane media appearances — that the current NRA is only 4 million members. That’s only a bit over 1% folks — as in the 1%ers that the “Occupy” movement showed they could attack and pin with the crime of hording all the wealth in the country.

So, addressing a 1% vs. 99% is already a proven point.

Then loony Lapierre admitted that many NRA current members are not in favor of ‘gun show loop-holes’, use guns in such a way that they don’t kill kids, and have no hunting need for 50 shot magazines.

So, if any significant portion of the current NRA 1% membership are actually in favor of sane gun issues like ‘no loop-holes’, no killer magazines, and care about their own kids, then many of the NRA’s own members (particularly starting with the mothers) could be easily stipped away from an organization that does not represent their own family interests — and mothers/wives often have influence over dads, (for those of you not married).

There are glaring weaknesses in the NRA structure, somewhat similar to the glaring weaknesses of other organizations that claim to speak for a particular group, such as; AIPAC for Jews, the Israeli government for average anti-war Israelis, the US government for almost all informed citizens, and corporations for workers, etc.

In the case of the NRA, an additional glaring weakness is the funding support of its members (which is mostly from dues to gun clubs, which remit half to these unwanted NRA spokespeople — who after what Lapierre (and the dumb ass NRA president) said to embarrass themselves and all NRA members on TV should be called spokes-idiots).

If the funding link is cut from gun clubs, which are basically family
and social clubs that care about kids, and if the funding link from
corporations can be disrupted through embarrassment to the corporations that fund NRA (far more than the members) by a focused BDS (campaign of boycotts, divestment and sanctions) which even shamed a ‘Hedge Fund’, a friggin hedge fund to sell-off- Bushmaster, then the money flow can be drastically reduces and the beast will starve (as Grover Norquist said).

Why, I’ll bet that as few as a small group of moms could get this
counter idea of a NRAPC going in ‘internet time’ (ie. real fast)!

So here’s what the new NRAPC would state as the reasons that current NRA members should switch to it, and why potentially everyone in the US (even if they don’t own a gun) should join:

The simple and real mission of the new NRAPC would be to promote the allowance (under the Second Amendment) that genuine hunting and target RIFLES that can be used for sport should be allowed by all Americans who are properly registered, trained, and pledge to use their rifles (remember the NRAPC is the National RIFLE Association of Parents and Children, so it addresses only long guns, rifles, shotguns — of the type that the old NRA’s current old president lied a fast one to CBS’s
Bob Schieffer, on “Face the Nation” to make the data on deaths sound better) for sporting or target practice — and to insure that no other guns would be used to KILL KIDS.

A pretty simple focus and directive — sort of like the Lord’s Prayer.

In fact, mentioning prayer, the new kid safe and anti-killing NRAPC
would be able to even approach and win-over a large number of
organizations, like the CMA (Country Music Awards), and many other groups who would not want to appear to be against anything that could save kids from being senselessly murdered, slaughtered, cut-down etc. like Newtown, by guns that the organization seemed to support in its silence and lack of commitment to a mothers’ created NRAPC to save kids from deadly gun death.

Hell, what’s more country than family, kids, and music, particularly in the Bible belt?

So get with it moms, form a counter group to gun slaughtering and
actionless bull shit from Lapierre and the captive political rubes of
the currentr NRA — take the leadership advantage away from these money-grubbing, heartless bastards who we’ve just seen on TV saying and doing nothing to save your precious kids, eh?

    Best, to you and yours,
