Voices from Mother’s Day DC 2009: Amy Ferris

Amy Ferris, author of the upcoming “Marrying George Clooney: Confessions from a Midlife Crisis,” penned this beautiful, touching piece “What Color Is Peace?” on the death of her mother and CODEPINK’s recent 24-hour Mother’s Day vigil for the Women’s International Perspective weekly online magazine. Here’s an excerpt:

One of my fondest memories of my mom is when she and her friends would sit around and knit. It seemed that in those few hours they shared their woes, they solved their problems, they spilled a couple of secrets, they found great humor, and solace and comfort, and there, among those women — a profound connection that could only be found in the bond between them. It seemed to me that women could accomplish anything once they put their minds (and knitting needles) to it.

A memory of my mom that I deeply longed for, but witnessed again this Mother’s Day in Washington, DC.

Voices from Mother’s Day 2009: Lindsey Campbell, 25

Lindsey Campbell, an amazing 25-year-old Iraq Veteran, singer-songwriter and mother of two-year-daughter Ruby, joined us at our Mother’s Day vigil last weekend. She gave an awesome concert and sparked some good conversations from the inside-perspective of a young women vet. She sent us these adorable photos that really gives a sense of the young, loving energy that bubbled through the day and night. From Lindsey:

Ruby had a blast!!!! Thank you for making my daughter welcome, showering her with love and affection, and giving her the funnest vacation with her mom she’s ever had!

Mother’s Day in Lafayette Park!

Most of us in CODEPINK — along with about 100 women from across the country — are just now rejoining the world after our 24-hour Mother’s Day vigil in Lafayette Park outside the White House this past weekend (yes, 24 hours…most of us didn’t sleep…ha).

It was an amazing event — every minute, nearly every woman was lying or knelt on the ground stitching together 6,000 knitted squares shipped to DC from women around the world into a 150′ ft. cozy that read, “We will not raise our children to kill another mother’s child.” Then we had a 3 a.m. fashion show, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream pops (um, so amazing), live music from super sassy Melissa Ivey, Iraq Vet Lindsey Campbell and Lizzie West, workshops, yoga…all to honor women worldwide living under occupation.

And our action afterward Sunday afternoon at the Washington Mall, where the U.S. Armed Services had set up hummers, artillerary, and tons of other major weapons for children to explore (ugh??), got some major attention.
